welcome: pacific palisades, calif., 2014. the ocean is my go-to place for clarity, peace, and god.

books: jack, 14, ft walton beach, fla., 2013. carrying the tender bar (upside down) as he paces and agonizes over how many pages he needs to read per day, to finish by the end of summer. when he finally finished it, he proclaimed it his favorite book.

bio: inset, christmas, 2011. jack and i, being silly; background, unexpected study in light and dark ... and self. 2010.

projects: the studio of artist kyle ragsdale, who was kind enough to let me observe him work and ask him questions ~ and take a few pics ~ when i was writing kissing & praying.

see his art here:

the grief project: artwork by mary sellers, a good friend of my son. when i was looking for an image to represent the project, i couldn't find anything that felt right. and then i remembered that mary had been drawing a portrait a day and posting them on instagram. there, i discovered exactly what i was looking for. perfect. i inquired, and she graciously, generously, agreed to let me use them. these were done while she was in high school. she is now studying at rhode island school of design (RISD). if you'd like to see more of mary's work, follow her on instagram @srellesart.

shareyourmojo: autumn in our backyard. and a glimpse of the playset with slide and climbing-wall. because no one knows how to share her mojo better than mother nature.

background for individual posts:

jack, 12, playing guitar in our study.

connect: jack (at left), 16, and the north central high school cross country team of 2014. an excellent example of leadership, teamwork and commitment.

photos: jack, 15; he had just returned from his friend rhiannon's quinceañera, and we were still sitting in the car, talking. i liked the lighting with the snow in the background, and wanted to take a picture of him. he closed his eyes and leaned away, in protest ... contributing to the moment's textured cinematic richness.

shopping cart: our giant sunflower ~ 11 ft!

thank you: pacific palisades, calif., 2014; ocean pics were taken near gladstones, a restaurant i worked at, briefly, during college.

main headshot: i was sitting in the car and had a few minutes between a meeting and teaching, so i took this selfie for my son, who was in his first year of college. it's a silly gesture in our family, that we have passed along to him. "hello, i love you." january 23, 2018.
